5.Water Tower

2018–24 · BA Thesis ・ 7 min read

Water Tower investigates the water towers that punctuate cities across Vietnam as silent witnesses to shifting political regimes and urban histories. Introduced through French colonial infrastructure and later repurposed under socialist modernization, these structures reveal how architecture outlives the ideologies that produced it.

The project combines field research, interviews, drone photogrammetry, and virtual reality to transform these sites into immersive environments. Visitors encounter the towers as digital traces that challenge conventional notions of heritage and aura, inspired by Walter Benjamin's reflections on reproduction and memory.
This project extends my Bachelor thesis in Communication Design at HTW Berlin, which focused on the theoretical and practical implications of photogrammetry as a tool for documenting and reinterpreting cultural heritage. The thesis provided both the conceptual framework and technical foundation for my later work with 3D scanning, digital preservation, and immersive storytelling.

Water Tower marked a turning point in my practice, shifting my focus from graphic design toward research-based computational media.
